How to Fix a Missing Meta Description on Shopify (Step-by-Step)

What is Missing Meta Description?

A meta description is the short paragraph that appears below your page title in Google search results. It doesn't directly affect your ranking — but it directly affects whether someone clicks on your result instead of the one above or below it. When it's missing, Google writes one for you by pulling random text from your page, which is almost always worse than what you'd write yourself.

Why It Matters

Google search results are a competition for clicks, not just rankings. You can rank #2 and lose to #4 if #4 has a meta description that speaks directly to what the searcher wants. For ecommerce stores, a well-written meta description that includes price, offer, or key benefit can meaningfully increase click-through rate — which also signals to Google that your result is more relevant, improving rankings over time.

How to Find This Issue

1

In Google Search Console, go to Performance → Pages. Look for pages with high impressions but low click-through rate — these are often pages with missing or auto-generated meta descriptions.

2

In your Shopify Admin, go to Online Store → Pages (and separately, Products and Collections). Edit each one and scroll to the SEO section at the bottom.

3

If the "Meta description" field is blank, that page has no meta description. If it's filled with text you didn't write, Shopify auto-populated it from your page content.

4

For a faster audit, use the free Meta Tag Checker tool to scan your homepage and key product pages for missing meta descriptions.

How to Fix It

1

Go to Shopify Admin → Products → click the product you want to fix.

2

Scroll to the bottom of the page and find the "Search engine listing" section. Click "Edit website SEO."

3

In the "Meta description" field, write a 120–160 character description. Include: what the product is, a key benefit or differentiator, and a soft call to action if space allows.

4

Good format: "[Product name] — [key feature/benefit]. [Secondary detail]. [Soft CTA like "Free shipping over $50" or "Ships in 1-2 days."]"

5

Repeat for your most important collection pages and any static pages (About, FAQ, etc.).

6

Save and allow 1–7 days for Google to re-crawl and update the display in search results.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Writing the same meta description for multiple pages — Google may ignore duplicates and auto-generate anyway

Going over 160 characters — Google truncates anything longer with an ellipsis, which looks unfinished

Writing only keywords instead of a sentence — "Shopify SEO audit tool fast PDF affordable" is not a description

Not including any differentiator — your description should give a reason to click over the competing results

Ignoring collection pages — these often drive more traffic than individual product pages and are frequently left blank
