Core Web Vitals

Core Web Vitals

Core Web Vitals are Google's set of user experience metrics that measure loading performance (LCP), visual stability (CLS), and interactivity (INP). They became an official Google ranking signal in 2021 and are measured using both lab tools (Lighthouse) and real-user data (Chrome UX Report).

Why It Matters for Shopify Stores

Core Web Vitals affect Google rankings for all pages — including Shopify product pages and collections. Poor CWV scores don't automatically tank rankings, but they create a disadvantage when competing with similar-quality content. For Shopify stores, LCP is typically the most impactful metric: slow hero images and unoptimized product photos are the primary causes of failing LCP. Stores passing all three Core Web Vitals see a modest ranking boost over stores that fail.

How to Check Your Store

Check Google Search Console > Core Web Vitals report for real-user data across your store. Use Google PageSpeed Insights for page-level lab data. Monitor monthly — CWV scores can change after theme updates or new app installations.

How to Fix It

Address LCP first: optimize hero and product images, eliminate render-blocking resources. Then fix CLS: add explicit dimensions to all images. Then address INP: defer heavy JavaScript from apps.
