AI Search & Visibility

GPTBot

GPTBot is OpenAI's web crawler that collects data to train and update ChatGPT and other OpenAI models. It identifies itself with the user agent 'GPTBot' and respects robots.txt directives. Websites can allow or block GPTBot by adding rules to their robots.txt file.

Why It Matters for Shopify Stores

Blocking GPTBot means your store's products and content will not be included in ChatGPT's training data or real-time browsing — making it less likely ChatGPT will accurately describe or recommend your store. As ChatGPT's shopping and product recommendations grow, being indexed by GPTBot becomes increasingly important for brand visibility. Many Shopify themes have overly restrictive robots.txt configurations that inadvertently block GPTBot.

How to Check Your Store

Visit yourdomain.com/robots.txt and search for 'GPTBot'. If you see 'User-agent: GPTBot' followed by 'Disallow: /', you are blocking it. If GPTBot is not mentioned, it can access any page allowed by your general rules.

How to Fix It

Add an explicit allow rule to your robots.txt: User-agent: GPTBot / Allow: /. If your robots.txt is managed by Shopify, you may need to use a custom robots.txt template in your theme to add AI crawler permissions.
