Meta Robots Tag
The meta robots tag (<meta name='robots' content='...'>) instructs search engine crawlers whether to index a page and whether to follow its links. Key values: index/noindex (controls indexing) and follow/nofollow (controls link following). A noindex tag prevents the page from appearing in search results.
Why It Matters for Shopify Stores
A single accidental noindex tag can remove important pages from Google entirely. This has happened to Shopify stores after theme updates, app installations, or development mode being left active. Conversely, certain pages should be intentionally noindexed (thank you pages, duplicate pagination pages, internal search results) to keep the index clean. Auditing meta robots tags is a critical technical SEO step.
How to Check Your Store
View page source on important pages and search for 'robots'. Check for any 'noindex' directives. Use Google Search Console > URL Inspection to verify that Google sees your pages as indexable.
Use the free shopify seo score toolHow to Fix It
Verify that no noindex tags are present on pages that should be indexed (products, collections, blog posts). Add noindex to pages that shouldn't be indexed (thank you pages, internal account pages).
