Search Intent

Search intent (user intent) is the underlying goal behind a search query. The four main intent types are: informational (want to learn), navigational (looking for a specific site), commercial investigation (comparing options before buying), and transactional (ready to purchase).

Why It Matters for Shopify Stores

Aligning your content with search intent is a fundamental SEO principle. If someone searches 'best yoga mats for beginners', they're in commercial investigation mode — they want comparison and reviews, not a product page. Sending them to a product page won't convert and will signal to Google that your page doesn't match intent. Understanding that 'buy organic cotton yoga mat' has transactional intent means that keyword belongs on a product or collection page, not a blog post.

How to Check Your Store

Search any target keyword in Google and analyze the top 10 results. If they're all product pages, the intent is transactional. If they're all blog posts or guides, the intent is informational. Match your page type to the dominant format.

How to Fix It

Audit your keyword targets and classify by intent. Ensure informational queries lead to blog content, transactional queries to product/collection pages. Restructure misaligned pages or create new pages for currently unmatched intents.
