Shopify Sections
Shopify Sections are modular, customizable content blocks that store owners can add, remove, and rearrange through the theme editor without touching code. In Online Store 2.0, sections can be added to any page type — not just the homepage.
Why It Matters for Shopify Stores
Sections make it easier to build custom page layouts without developer involvement, but they can also bloat your theme if you accumulate unused or duplicate sections. Each section added to a page typically loads its own CSS and JavaScript. Over time, a heavily customized store with many sections — especially from apps — can accumulate significant render-blocking code. Regularly reviewing which sections are active and removing unused ones is a performance maintenance task.
How to Check Your Store
In Shopify Admin > Online Store > Themes > Customize, you can see all active sections on each page template. Use the App Bloat Calculator to measure the script impact of section-loaded app content.

Remove sections you don't actively use. Where possible, use Shopify's native section features (like featured collections, testimonials) instead of third-party app sections that load extra scripts.
