Average Order Value (AOV)
Average Order Value is the average amount spent each time a customer places an order. It's calculated as total revenue divided by number of orders. For Shopify stores, AOV is a core metric alongside conversion rate and traffic volume.
Why It Matters for Shopify Stores
Increasing AOV is one of the fastest paths to revenue growth because it doesn't require more traffic or new customers — just more value from existing purchases. A 20% AOV increase on 1,000 monthly orders at $60 average = $12,000 more monthly revenue. The most effective AOV tactics: free shipping thresholds slightly above current AOV, product bundles, upsells at checkout, and quantity discounts.
How to Check Your Store
In Shopify admin > Analytics > Dashboard, your AOV is displayed. Track it over time to see if it's trending up or down relative to your tactics.
