Bounce Rate

Bounce rate is the percentage of visitors who land on a page and leave without taking any action — no clicks, no scrolling, no purchase. A 'bounce' is a single-page session. High bounce rates (above 70%) typically indicate a mismatch between what visitors expected to find and what your page delivers.

Why It Matters for Shopify Stores

High bounce rates are expensive — you paid (with ads or SEO effort) to get that visitor, and they left without converting or even exploring your store. For Shopify stores, common high-bounce causes are: slow page load times on mobile, product pages that don't match the ad creative, missing trust signals that cause immediate doubt, and poor mobile layouts. Reducing bounce rate is often faster than acquiring new traffic — you fix the leaks rather than turning up the tap.

How to Check Your Store

In Google Analytics, check bounce rate per page and per traffic source. A blog post with 80% bounce rate is normal. A product page with 80% bounce rate is a problem. Segment by mobile vs desktop to see if mobile users bounce significantly more.

How to Fix It

Match landing page content to the ad/link that brought visitors. Improve mobile page speed. Add trust signals. Ensure the product page headline matches the visitor's search intent. Use heat maps (Hotjar, Microsoft Clarity) to see where users stop scrolling.
