Click-Through Rate (CTR)

Click-through rate is the percentage of people who click your link after seeing it in search results. It's calculated as (clicks ÷ impressions) × 100. A higher CTR means more traffic from the same search ranking position. Average organic CTR in Google is 3% for position 1, dropping to under 1% by position 10.

Why It Matters for Shopify Stores

CTR is a multiplier on your SEO investment. If your page ranks #3 for a keyword but has a below-average CTR (because the title and meta description aren't compelling), you're leaving significant traffic on the table. For Shopify stores, CTR can be improved without changing rankings — by writing better title tags, meta descriptions, and earning rich snippets (star ratings, prices). A CTR improvement from 2% to 4% at position 3 doubles your organic traffic.

How to Check Your Store

In Google Search Console, go to Performance > Search Results. Sort by Impressions to find pages with many impressions but low clicks (low CTR). These are priority pages for title/description improvements.

How to Fix It

Rewrite title tags to be more compelling and specific. Write custom meta descriptions with benefit statements and CTAs. Implement schema markup to earn rich snippets. Use numbers, questions, and emotional triggers in titles where appropriate.
