Noindex

The noindex directive instructs search engines not to include a page in their search index. It can be set via meta tag (<meta name='robots' content='noindex'>) or HTTP header (X-Robots-Tag: noindex). Noindexed pages remain accessible to users but don't appear in search results.

Why It Matters for Shopify Stores

Strategic noindex use keeps your search index clean by excluding pages with no SEO value (thank you pages, account pages, internal search results) that would otherwise dilute your overall site quality signals. The danger is accidental noindex — a development setting left active, an SEO app misconfiguration, or a theme update that adds noindex to all product pages. This is rare but devastating: your entire product catalog can disappear from Google overnight.

How to Check Your Store

In Google Search Console, check the Coverage report for 'Excluded: noindex' pages. Spot-check important pages with URL Inspection to verify they show as 'URL is on Google' or 'URL is not on Google'.

How to Fix It

Remove noindex from any page that should be indexed. Add noindex to pages that shouldn't be indexed: checkout thank you, /account/, /cart, internal search results (?q=).
