Shopify Checkout

Shopify Checkout is the built-in, hosted checkout process that handles payment processing, address entry, shipping selection, and order confirmation. On standard Shopify plans, the checkout is Shopify-hosted and cannot be fully customized. Shopify Plus allows deeper customization via checkout.liquid.

Why It Matters for Shopify Stores

Shopify's checkout has an average conversion rate of 15–18% (industry-best), which is why Shopify doesn't allow heavy customization — every customization risks degrading this performance. For store owners, the focus should be on the pre-checkout experience (product page, cart) and trust signals on the checkout page. Common audit findings: missing payment method icons on product pages create uncertainty before checkout; slow page load makes shoppers abandon before reaching checkout.

How to Check Your Store

Go through your own checkout on mobile as a first-time customer. Check: are payment method icons visible? Is the form easy to complete on mobile? Is there a clear progress indicator?

How to Fix It

Add payment badge icons to product pages. Enable express checkout options (Shop Pay, PayPal, Apple Pay). Use Shopify's checkout extensibility (Checkout UI Extensions) to add trust elements to the checkout pages without compromising checkout performance.
