Shopify Metafields
Metafields allow Shopify merchants to store additional custom data attached to products, collections, customers, and orders. Common metafield uses: product specifications, ingredient lists, care instructions, custom SEO descriptions, and structured data attributes.
Why It Matters for Shopify Stores
Metafields enable richer product pages and better structured data without third-party apps. For SEO specifically, metafields can store additional keyword-rich product attributes (material, dimensions, certifications) that can be displayed in templates and included in schema markup. Poorly configured metafields (especially custom image metafields with broken URLs) can cause broken images that hurt user experience and SEO.
How to Check Your Store
In Shopify admin > Settings > Custom Data, review your metafield definitions. Check if any are configured but not displaying correctly on product pages.
How to Fix It
Audit your metafield definitions and remove any that are unused or generating broken references. Ensure custom image metafields reference valid image files.
