Above the Fold

Above the fold refers to the portion of a webpage that's visible without scrolling — the first screen a visitor sees. The term comes from newspaper publishing, where the most important stories appeared on the top half of the folded front page. In ecommerce, this is where your conversion-critical elements must appear.

Why It Matters for Shopify Stores

On mobile (where most Shopify traffic arrives), 'above the fold' is typically 667px tall or less — about 3–5 content blocks. What you put in that space determines whether a visitor stays or leaves. The most critical above-fold elements for product pages: the product image, product name, price, key trust signals, and the add-to-cart button. If buyers must scroll before seeing a price or buy button, your above-fold design is costing you conversions. Many Shopify themes bury the add-to-cart button below description text — a fixable layout issue.

How to Check Your Store

Visit your product page on a mobile device. Without scrolling, can you see: the product image, title, price, and add-to-cart button? If any of these are below the fold, it's a conversion issue.

How to Fix It

In your Shopify theme, reorder product page layout elements so the image, title, price, variant selectors, and add-to-cart button appear above the fold on mobile. Add a sticky add-to-cart bar that follows the user as they scroll.
