Touch Target Size

Touch targets are tappable interface elements (buttons, links, icons) on touchscreen devices. Apple's Human Interface Guidelines and Google's Material Design both recommend a minimum touch target size of 44×44 pixels to prevent accidental taps and improve mobile usability.

Why It Matters for Shopify Stores

Undersized touch targets cause missed taps, accidental clicks on adjacent elements, and frustration — particularly for users with larger fingers or when using a phone with one hand. On Shopify stores, undersized 'Add to Cart' buttons, small navigation icons, and tiny filter chips on collection pages are common causes of high mobile bounce rates. Google's Mobile Usability report in Search Console flags touch targets smaller than 48px.

How to Check Your Store

Test your store on a real mobile device, tapping all interactive elements. In Chrome DevTools mobile emulation, use the touch mode to test click accuracy. Google Search Console > Mobile Usability flags specific small touch target issues.

How to Fix It

Increase padding on buttons and links so the tappable area meets 44×44px minimum. In Shopify themes, this is a CSS change: add min-height: 44px and min-width: 44px to interactive elements.
