Exit Intent
Exit intent is a behavioral technology that detects when a visitor is about to leave a webpage (typically by tracking cursor movement toward the browser close button) and triggers a popup or offer at that moment. Common exit intent offers include discount codes, email capture, and last-chance reminders.
Why It Matters for Shopify Stores
Exit intent popups target users at the highest-intent moment before abandonment. When configured correctly — an offer relevant to what the user was viewing, with a clear value proposition — they can recover 5–15% of abandoning visitors. However, poorly implemented exit intent (irrelevant offers, aggressive timing, bad mobile execution) adds cognitive friction and can increase bounce rates. Mobile exit intent is particularly difficult because cursor movement isn't reliable.
How to Check Your Store
Test your own store to see if an exit intent popup triggers as you navigate away. Evaluate: Is the offer relevant? Is the timing appropriate? Does it work properly on mobile?
Use the free trust score calculator toolHow to Fix It
Use a well-tested exit intent app (Privy, Klaviyo popups, OptiMonk). Segment offers by page context. Test timing and offer value. Disable on mobile or use scroll-based triggers instead.
