Upselling

Upselling is the practice of encouraging customers to purchase a higher-tier, more premium version of the product they're considering, or to add complementary products. In Shopify stores, upsells typically appear on product pages, in the cart, and at checkout.

Why It Matters for Shopify Stores

Upselling directly increases Average Order Value without requiring additional traffic. Shopify merchants with well-configured upsells typically see AOV increases of 10–30%. The most effective upsell timing is immediately after the 'Add to Cart' click or at checkout — not before, when the customer hasn't committed yet. Shopify's native checkout now supports Checkout UI Extensions for post-purchase upsells without redirecting customers away from checkout.

How to Fix It

Add a 'Frequently Bought Together' or 'You Might Also Like' section to product pages. Use Shopify's native checkout upsell apps (ReConvert, Zipify OCU). Ensure upsells are relevant to what the customer is buying.
